Patriotic martyr Yu Gwan-sun was born in Yongdu-ri, Byeongcheon-myeon in 1902. When the March 1 Independence Movement broke out, she returned home to Cheonan from Seoul, where she studied at the Ewha Academy. She organized the Aunae Manse Movement on April 1, 1919, and was consequently arrested and imprisoned at Gongju Prison. In August 1919, she was transferred to Seodaemun Prison, where she fell victim to atrocious tortures by the Japanese until her untimely death on October 12, 1920. In order to pass on the patriotic spirit of Yu, a memorial monument was erected in 1969, and a memorial ceremony honoring the independence activist has been held every year on October 12 since 1972. Situated near the site are the signal fire site and tower she used to announce the uprising as well as her former home and Maebong Church, which she attended.

There is a famous sundae (Korean sausage) street situated near the Aunae (Byeongcheon) Market, where patriotic martyr Yu Gwan-sun led an independence movement. With the establishment of a ham manufacturing plant near Byeongcheon in the 1960s, people in the area began making sausages using vegetables and pork byproducts such as intestines and clotted blood, and a couple of sundae restaurants began springing up along this street. Its fame grew through word-of-mouth, and the “special restaurant” designation began to be given in 1998. There are now dozens of sundae restaurants lining up this street.
